What is a Headache?

In headaches, you’ll typically feel pain on both sides of your head, involving areas as the forehead, temples, and the back of your neck. They can last thirty minutes to a week. The most common type of headache is a tension headache, which is generally caused by stress, anxiety, or muscle strain. Another known type is cluster headaches, and are debilitating headaches that can recur up to eight times a day.

What is a Migraine?

A migraine headache is intense and severe and may have additional symptoms besides head pain. You may experience nausea, pain in the temples or behind one eye or ear, light or sound sensitivity, and vomiting. Some migraine sufferers see spots or flashing lights. Migraine pain can be severe enough to require emergency medical care. While migraines can affect both sides of the head, they generally affect one side of the head. The pain of a migraine headache will make your daily tasks difficult to complete.

Migraines, which can be triggered by emotional anxiety, hormonal changes, food, and other factors, are classified into migraines with aura and migraines without aura. Migraines with aura include sensations ten to thirty minutes before the attack. With these migraines, you may have a lack of mental alertness, have difficulty concentrating, see unusual lines or flashing lights, or feel numbness or tingling in hands or face.

Treatment for Headaches and Migraines

You can get some relief from minor headaches through pain relievers, rest, massage, and ice and heat therapy. For severe headaches and migraines, consider chiropractic care. Tension headaches respond well to manipulation of the upper cervical vertebrae. Migraines can benefit from this treatment as well, but migraine sufferers should also avoid food and lifestyle triggers. Massage therapy and physical therapy can also bring relief by easing stress and muscle strain.
