WHAT IS ERGONOMICS?
Ergonomists study human potential in relationship to occupational requirements. They have attempted to differentiate particular postures in order to significantly lower risk of injury. Doctors have observed that workers whose occupations require them to sustain certain body positions for lengthy periods of time develop musculoskeletal difficulty. There are three basic ergonomic principles that could significantly lower risk of injury and potentially pave the way to better physical health:
- Work activities should allow a worker to implement different, but consistently healthy and safe postures.
- When muscles need to exert, it should be accomplished by making use of the major appropriate muscle groups available.
- Occupational activities should be achieved with the joints at about mid-point of their range of motion.
This is emphasized predominantly when it applies to the head, torso, and upper limbs. Implementing these principles is difficult without a skilled professional because it is challenging to observe one’s own joint and muscle function. The Scenic Health physicians and physical therapist are trained and skilled in observing these functions, and could inevitably assist in creating a healthier posture and awareness for their patients. They are able to show how people misuse their bodies and how daily work habits can be unsafe. Our staff can instruct people how to avoid unsafe work habits and reduce the amount of needless muscular force and possible injury they may inflict to their bodies. Our physicians show patients exercises and positions that will not necessarily teach them anything new, but teach them uncomplicated everyday fundamentals and activities performed in a precise manner. Rather, patients experience the physical benefits from learning these fundamentals that contribute to daily tasks such as properly standing, sitting, walking, and working. Call today to set up a free consultation for exercises and learn to make your day-to-day activities safer and healthier for your body. Call (850) 438-5900.
WHAT IS CHIROPRACTIC?
Chiropractic is the science concerned with the relationship between the structure of the nervous system and its function as it relates to the restoration and preservation of health.
HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC CARE WORK?
Chiropractic care detects, reduces and prevents nervous system dysfunction by restoring the vertebrae to their functional positions.
WHAT DO CHIROPRACTORS TREAT?
Chiropractors reduce Vertebral Subluxation Complexes by realigning the spinal vertebrae. This alleviates: headaches, neck pain or stiffness, pain in the upper and lower extremities, backaches, pain between the shoulders, pain and numbness in the hands and feet, muscular pains in the chest and abdomen, and sciatica.
WHY CHIROPRACTIC VS. MEDICINE?
With the growing awareness of the connection between lifestyle and the quality of one's life has come an appreciation for drugless method of healing. Chiropractic care focuses on structural alignment of the spine and extremities though also considers the role of diet, exercise, spiritual and mental balance.
HOW IS IT DIFFERENT?
Your spine houses and the signals back and protects the spinal cord, the "wiring" that carries forth between your brain and every tissue and organ in your body. Where medicine uses drugs and surgery, chiropractic focuses on optimizing the body's innate healing abilities via a method known as spinal manipulation. By applying pressure to restore normal mobility to malfunctioning areas of the spine, this often brings about pain relief and restoration of lost function. Treatment may also include appropriate physiotherapeutic modalities (heat, cold, massage), advice on nutrition and lifestyle modification and customized exercise program. Our focus is on patient empowerment and independence through education and self-help procedures.
WHAT TYPE OF TRAINING DO CHIROPRACTORS RECEIVE?
Chiropractors receive a doctor of chiropractic degree from a nationally accredited chiropractic college. Chiropractors and medical doctors' educations are very similar in the courses studied - and the total classroom hours. The major differences are that medical students study pharmacology (or prescription drugs) and generally surgery whereas the chiropractic student studies spinal adjusting or manipulation techniques and advanced radiology. Today, more and more medical doctors are working in partnership with chiropractic doctors, as we understand how each professional can benefit the patients.

WHAT IS AN ADJUSTMENT?
The intent of a spinal adjustment is to restore normal motion and function of the framework and remove Spinal Nerve Stress and Interference, allowing the body to function at a higher level. Chiropractors use several adjusting techniques to accomplish that, many characterized by a precise, specific thrust. The chiropractic adjustment generally differs from spinal manipulation practiced by a physical therapist or an osteopath because the chiropractic adjustment is more specific. It is done not just to mobilize a joint but to remove subluxations. The adjustment is a gentle, precise and effective placement, primarily by hand, of the vertebra into its correct position. Adjusting the vertebrae to restore normal function removes the irritation and helps the nervous system return to its natural efficiency. As a result, chiropractic adjustments support the body's defense system, maximizing innate recuperative powers and minimizing the need for more invasive procedures.
ARE CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENTS SAFE?
Chiropractic treatments are extremely safe for individuals of all ages - from infants to 100 year olds. Our treatments are safe because we only use natural and noninvasive methods of care. Research consistently shows that care from chiropractors is among the safest care available and is literally light years ahead of traditional medical care in terms of "safeness".
IS THE PROCEDURE PAINFUL?
The treatments themselves are not painful. In fact most patients look forward to their treatments as many experience relief immediately afterwards. Individuals who present with moderate to severe pain may experience some minor discomfort for obvious reasons, however, care is always gentle, safe and noninvasive.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE OR WHEN WILL I FEEL BETTER?
While treatment lengths vary somewhat from person to person and from condition to condition, there are a few rules of thumb you can follow. First, newer injuries, if treated appropriately and immediately, tend to respond to fewer visits assuming that major tissue injury has not occurred. Many of these first time injuries can be effectively managed in as little as 5 to 10 visits. Conditions that have been present for greater that 3 months and recurring conditions are generally more stubborn and difficult to manage. Resolution typically requires 12 visits or more. The only sure way to determine how long your treatment will take is to schedule a consultation and/or examination. For those of you who believe in just waiting for the problem to "go away" on it's own - understand that the longer your condition has been around, the more treatments it will eventually require to resolve.
ARE CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS SAFE DURING PREGNANCY?
Yes, regular adjustments are completely safe. Chiropractors are trained to alter treatment to meet the special needs of pregnant women. Our tables can be modified to accommodate the changes in your body and the adjusting techniques will be modified as necessary during the course of your pregnancy.
CAN CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP ME DURING PREGNANCY?
Yes. Chiropractors are required to study obstetrics and they are trained to understand mechanical and physical aspects of what may be causing you pain or discomfort during pregnancy. Chiropractic adjustments help provide freedom from nerve irritation which could be vitally important in insuring your child's healthy, normal development. Adjustments also help to insure your pelvic bones are in proper alignment, which may result in an easier delivery with less chance of injury to you or your child.
CAN CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP ME FOLLOWING MY PREGNANCY?
Postpartum Chiropractic Care can help to relieve the low back, hip and leg problems that may occur following the mechanical stress and trauma of pregnancy and delivery.
IS CHIROPRACTIC CARE APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN?
Yes, children benefit from chiropractic care. Early intervention is the key to maintaining a healthy spine.
WILL I ALWAYS NEED CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENTS?
You may have heard the notion that once you go to the chiropractor you will have to keep going back. Before we answer that question, ask yourself how many times you have visited a dentist? Like most people, you've probably gone dozens of times. Why? Quite simply, to prevent your teeth from literally rotting out of your head. Once we have eliminated your pain and rehabilitated the injured tissues, we do recommend that you maintain a schedule of periodic spinal checkups. Like your dentist and like many of the medical experts are now recognizing, prevention is the key to reducing recurrences of existing health conditions and minimizing new injuries in the future. So the answer is yes, we want you to keep coming back, but just periodically. Periodic chiropractic care minimizes spinal and nerve stresses, reduces recurrences of old injuries, prevents new injuries from developing, minimizes degenerative processes, which enhances overall health and wellness.
HOW DOES A CHIROPRACTOR TREAT STRESS?
Your doctor of chiropractic is trained to restore the health of your spine and joints. Adjustments and related treatments can help relieve tense muscles, realign joints, and reduce pain caused by stress.
WHAT CAN I DO TO MANAGE STRESS?
You can't get rid of stress in your life, but you can learn to manage it. Your chiropractor can suggest a stress reduction program for you. It may include muscle relaxation, deep breathing, exercise, and visualization to clear your mind, proper diet, and enough rest.
HOW DOES STRESS AFFECT MY BODY?
Healthy muscles contract and relax as you move. But when muscles tense in response to stress, they can relax fully. When stress persists, the muscle becomes tight-like knots in a rope. Tight muscles can pull joints out of alignment, irritating nerves and causing pain. If your spine is misaligned, the rest of your body becomes even more prone to stress and disease.
WHAT IS VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION (VS)?
A misalignment of one or more of the vertebra of the spinal column, which causes Neuro-Spinal Stress of nerve functions and interference to the transmission of mental impulses resulting in a lessening of the body's innate ability to express its maximum health potential.
WHAT IS VERTEBRAL SUBLUXATION COMPLEX (VSC)?
The consequence of neglected or uncorrected VS, causing bone, disc, ligament, muscle, nerve and organ degeneration and malfunction.
IS VSC SERIOUS?
Yes. A STRUCTURAL DEFICIENCY can inhibit the natural flow of information, energy and nutrition to specific organs, muscles, glands and other tissues of the body and cause a malfunction, which if uncorrected always leads to a health problem. It has been proven that Chiropractic "Well Patients" have an immune response index, 200% higher than non-chiropractic well patients, and 400% higher than seriously ill patients. The simple weight of a quarter pressing against a nerve can shut down that nerve's function up to 60%. Imagine if that nerve goes to a vital organ, like the heart. In that case, the heart could only function at 40% , even with good nutrition, acupuncture and exercise.
WHAT CAUSES VS AND VSC?
Some of the more common causes are: Work, Auto or Sports related Stress or Trauma, Emotional Traumas, Nutritional and Chemical Imbalances or Abuse, Meridian Imbalances, the Birthing Process and Poor Posture.
HOW ARE VS AND VSC DETECTED?
Following an in-depth Patient History, patients are given a thorough Chiropractic Examination and Postural Analysis to determine if they may be helped with Chiropractic Care. Orthopedic and X-ray Examinations are performed when indicated.
HOW ARE VS AND VSC TREATED?
Through a series of specific chiropractic adjustments.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A CHIROPRACTIC PATIENT?
First, we'll start with a comprehensive history including everything from your past medical history, lifestyle habits, job requirements, etc. to uncover hidden sources of stress in your life. This is followed by a very thorough physical examination to determine the cause of your problems. X-rays may be ordered on occasion if you have a history of previous trauma or chronic complaints.
WHAT ABOUT MY SYMPTOMS?
Our job is to get you out of pain as quickly as possible and then to help you get healthy. The body's functions are designed to:
1) cleanse itself 2) repair itself, it is genetically designed to stay alive and functioning for as long as possible. Every response it has, is geared to that end, or designed to accomplish that end. It's a method of cleansing, maintenance and repair.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Anyone with a biomechanical fault or who desires more energy for thinking, metabolizing and healing. Discover what Drug-Free, Non-Surgical, Natural Health Care can do for you.
WILL MY INSURANCE COVER CHIROPRACTIC CARE?
Few people realize that most insurance policies cover chiropractic care. In fact many have covered chiropractic care for years. The insurance carriers have come to recognize that chiropractic care effectively treats many musculoskeletal disorders. We accept most major health insurances. Also, injuries incurred in an auto accident are covered under the auto insurance policy. If you would like more information or to inquire if we accept your insurance carrier, please call our office at 850-438-5900.
I FEEL OK, WHY DO I NEED TO BE EXAMINED AFTER AN ACCIDENT?
njuries from car accidents are extremely common. In fact, researchers have shown that accidents involving vehicles that are going 8 mph or faster damage the spine.
WHAT IS WHIPLASH?
Whiplash of the neck is caused by any sudden involuntary forced movement of the head in any direction, and the resultant rebound of the head or neck in the opposite direction. Consequently there are injuries to the surrounding and supporting tissues of the neck and head. Whiplash may occur without you being aware of it. Because of the degrees in which it occurs, symptoms may not always appear immediately. What occurs during the accident is ligaments are stretched beyond their limit for which they were intended. This will result in muscle spasms, alteration of the normal curve of the neck and spine and the resultant limitation of movement. An experienced Doctor of Chiropractic can diagnose and correct these problems with spinal adjustments and physical modalities/ rehab. to the effected area. If you were involved in an accident or suffer from trauma to the head or neck, consult a Doctor of Chiropractic for evaluation.
CAN CHIROPRACTIC HELP ARTHRITIS?
Doctors have not found a cure for Arthritis, However, new treatment for this disease has greatly improved the quality of life for patients with arthritis. Doctors of Chiropractic will customize a pain management program of physical modalities and spinal adjustments that fits the patients needs. For patients who are experiencing pain or stiffness in the hands, paraffin baths (hot wax baths) have yielded great results. Preventive care is also an important consideration in regards to arthritis. As the disease develops spinal fusion can occur resulting in greater loss of mobility and increased pain. Your Doctor of Chiropractic will thoroughly evaluate your condition in order to design a treatment program that will hopefully prevent or slow down the process. If you have arthritis or if you think you do, consult a Doctor of Chiropractic for evaluation.
WHAT IS SPINAL DISC?
The disc is a small cartilage pad that is situated between spinal bones. The soft jellylike center is contained by layers if fibrous tissues. Each disc serves as a connector, spacer, and shock absorber for the spine. When healthy, discs allow normal turning and bending. Because of the way each disc is attached to the vertebra above and below it, a disc cannot "slip" as commonly thought. However, trauma or injury to the spine can cause discs to bulge, herniate, or worse, rupture. This can be quite painful, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerve roots, interfering with their function.
Since spinal discs have a very poor blood supply, they depend upon the circulation of the joint fluids to bring nutrients and expel waste. If a spinal joint loses its normal motion and this pumping action is impaired, the health of the disc deteriorates. Like a wet sponge, a healthy disc is flexible. A dry sponge is hard, stiff, and can crack easily. This is how many disc problems begin. The chiropractic approach to disc problems is to help restore better motion and position to the spinal joint. Besides reducing disc bulging, better spinal function helps reduce inflammation and begin the slow process of healing the surrounding soft tissues. Many patients have avoided needless surgery or a dependency on pain pills, by choosing conservative chiropractic care. The traditional approach to disc problems often ignores spinal function. Conservative chiropractic care is safer and more effective than back surgery.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF LOW BACK PAIN?
One common cause of low back pain is roughness, irritation or inflammation of the facet joint, location of many of the pain-sensing nerves in the spine. Another source of low back pain could be a bulging disc putting pressure on the spinal cord or a nerve root. This can cause numbness, tingling or pain down the leg.
CAN CHIROPRACTIC CARE BE USED TO TREAT LOW BACK PAIN?
Yes! The chiropractic approach to low back pain is to help restore a more normal motion and position of the affected vertebrae by specific adjustments. The success of this approach has been documented in research projects and has helped many patients avoid surgery.
WILL CHIROPRACTIC CARE HELP MY COMMON HEADACHES?
A frequent and overlooked cause of headaches is the malfunction of spinal bones in the neck and upper back. When the bones of the spine lose their normal position or motion, sensitive nerves and blood vessels to the head can be affected. When spinal nerves and related tissues are stretched or imitated they can produce throbbing headaches. Aspirin and medications may cover up these warning signs, but do not correct the underlying structural cause.
Many people find relief and correction with chiropractic care. If a thorough examination reveals reduced range of motion, loss of normal spinal curves, or mechanical restrictions, chiropractic care should be considered. After a complete explanation, you'll receive a care program designed for your unique spinal problem. Many patients report headache relief. Others find that the correction of their problem takes longer because their spinal problem has existed undetected for many years. Every patient responds differently. Regardless of how you respond, enjoy the drug-free results millions have enjoyed by consulting a chiropractic doctor.
CAN I GET RELIEF FROM MIGRAINE HEADACHES?
Do you know that 15 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches. There are many reasons for migraine headaches. Doctors of Chiropractic have discovered one of the most common reasons is cervical spinal degeneration, a misalignment and straightening of the neck that puts pressure on the nerves and arteries, causing them to swell. With less blood and oxygen reaching the brain a headache develops. By adjusting the cervical vertebra, less pressure is put on the nerves and arteries allowing blood and oxygen to f low to the brain. Most headaches can successfully be treated by a Doctor of Chiropractic through spinal adjustments and physical modalities/rehab.
WHY AM I HAVING MUSCLE SPASMS?
Each of us have over 600 voluntary muscles in our bodies that work together to control even the simplest of movements. Muscles work in conjunction with joints, such as cartilage, and bones to provide motion. When the spinal vertebra become misaligned and irritated, it disrupts the nerve muscle relationship and causes a muscle spasm. These symptoms can be treated by a Doctor of Chiropractic through spinal adjustments physical modalities/ rehab and left alone they can become permanent causing chronic pain. Muscle pain can also be a symptom of a more serious problem and should be addressed immediately.
WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT NECK PAIN?
A stiff neck can sometimes come from nowhere. Actually the problem could have very well been developing for quite sometime. The neck consists of seven small bones collectively know as the cervical spine. They support the 22 bones of the head. The delicate curvature of these areas must be maintained for normal blood flow and nerve function. It is this curvature that can change over a period of time due to many things such as trauma, poor posture, stress or poorly performed exercises. A Doctor of Chiropractic will examine the cervical vertebra to determine if the problem relates to the spine or the muscle and the ligaments around the spine. Subluxations can be treated by a Doctor of Chiropractic through spinal adjustments and physical modalities/rehab.
WHAT IS SCOLIOSIS?
Scoliosis is an abnormal, curvature of the spine. Scoliosis has many causes, some due to injury while others are inherited. One common reason for scoliosis is abnormal development of the vertebra in the spine. The most common form of scoliosis is an abnormal pattern of muscle and ligament growth as a teenager grows in height. Doctors of Chiropractic are trained to recognize scoliosis or the potential for developing scoliosis. With early detection, chiropractic treatment can correct many cases of scoliosis.
WHAT IS SCIATICA?
Sciatica is intense pain shooting down the back of one or both legs. It is caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerves which run down the back of each leg. This can be due by Vertebral Subluxation Complex, the misalignment of vertebrae. It can be accompanied by bulging or herniation of the cartilaginous discs that separate the vertebrae.
HOW IS SCIATICA TREATED?
In the past sciatica has been treated with muscle relaxers, pain medications, physical therapy and surgery. The chiropractic approach to sciatica involves the use of careful directed and controlled pressure to return the vertebrae to their functional alignment and reduce the irritation of the sciatic nerve and the associated pain.
